Development of environmentally friendly technology on leather manufacture is mandatory for imperative for the sustenance of the tanning industry. In present study, the combination tanning system based on the Tingi tannin – alum was used for the production of lining leather. Powder of Tingi (Ceriops tagal) bark from Indonesia has been evaluated for its tanning characteristics in combination tanning system based on Tingi and alum. Tingi - alum leathers tanned using 15 - 25 % Tingi bark powder and 4 % alum gives the good results. Resulted in shrinkage temperature increased 68 - 70°C. This lining leathers showed compact fibre structure, indicating that the tanning process did not bring any major change or destruction on the structure of the leathers. Tingi – alum combination tanning system resulted in leathers with good organoleptic, physical and chemical properties. The work presented in this paper established the use of tingi and alum combination tanning system as in effective alternative cleaner tanning methodology.
